Free sample question: Error Spotting
Parts of the following sentence have been given as options. Select the option that contains an error.
Each of the students who attended the workshop were given a certificate at the end of the day.
Show answer and explanation
Answer: C
Option A: 'Each of the students' is correct; 'each' is singular and is properly followed by 'of the + plural noun'.
Option B: 'who attended the workshop' is a correct relative clause referring to 'the students', so the plural sense of 'attended' causes no problem.
Option C: Correct. The verb must agree with the singular subject 'Each', not with 'students'. Correct form: 'was given a certificate at the end of the day'.
Option D: There is an error in part C, so 'No error' is wrong.
