Word Usage Practice: Replace the Wrong Word

In a word usage question one word is highlighted and may not fit the sentence. You choose the replacement that makes the meaning correct, or you choose No replacement required if the original word already works. The answers show the corrected sentence, so you can check the meaning in context.

Word usage

How to solve word usage questions

  1. Read the sentence and say in your own words what it is trying to tell you.
  2. Ask whether the highlighted word supports or opposes that meaning.
  3. If it opposes the meaning, look for the option that restores a sensible message.
  4. Read the corrected sentence once to be sure it is natural and complete.
